CLASS 1 (March 16th)

Dear students,

As you may already know, we are experiencing a special situation in which we will all have to work from our homes. For this reason, you will have to check this blog on Mondays and Wednesdays to do the activities I will be posting.

OK! So let's begin. Today we will work on a really short story about an "EMERGENCY LANDING".

1. Read the first part of the story, if there are any words you do not understand, you can look them up in an online dictionary.

Emergency Landing

‘Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking,’ said the voice over the intercom. ‘I’m afraid we have engine trouble, so we’ll have to make an emergency landing. There’s no cause for alarm; we can get down quite safely. I apologize for the inconvenience.’

‘Oh no!’ said one of the passengers. I’ve got an important meeting, and I don’t want to be late.’

‘Where are we, anyway?’ said the passenger in the seat next to him. They both looked out of the window.

‘I suppose we’ll land down there,’ said the first passenger. ‘It looks like it's the only possible place. I don’t recognize it, though.’

The stewardess, who was coming down the aisle, overheard. ‘We are in the middle of nowhere, I’m afraid,’ she said ruefully. ‘We won’t find a qualified mechanic there. But don’t worry: the crew has been trained to do repairs, and they shouldn’t take very long.’

‘Hmm. Will we be able to make ourselves understood to the natives?’ the first passenger asked.

‘I don't think so, sir. I don't think anyone there can speak our language.’

The passengers didn’t like the sound of that. ‘What if they’re hostile?’ someone else wanted to know. ‘We could be in danger! ...

2. Did you notice the story does not have an ending? That is because this was just the first part of the story. Now decide if the sentences below are true or false. If they are false, correct them.

a. There is a problem with the engine.
b. They immediately recognize the place of the emergency landing.
c. A passenger is worried about his business.
d. A team of qualified mechanics will repair the engine.
e. One of the passengers believes the local people will understand their language.

3. Since the story does not have an ending, I would like you to invent one. Write a paragraph between 80-100 words (or more) to explain what happens next. Be creative!

These questions might help you think about what you are going to write:
Where will they land? What kind of place is it? Who will they meet? How do people look like there?
What language do they speak? Will they be friendly?

IMPORTANT NOTE:  YOU HAVE TO DO ACTIVITIES 2 AND 3 BEFORE WEDNESDAY 25th (NEXT WEEK). YOU CAN DO IT IN THE COMMENTS BELOW THIS POST.  PLEASE WRITE DOWN YOUR FULL NAME AND SURNAME AS WELL.

If you have any doubts, do not hesitate to contact me.

 Hugs,

Miss Flor
